Handyperson scheme (Age Concern Salisbury District)

The handyperson scheme is a service which helps older people to remain living independently in their own home by assisting with a range of minor household tasks.

These tasks typically constitute the kind of jobs which have become too difficult for the older person to safely undertake themselves.

These may include falls prevention type tasks such as changing a light bulb; plumbing tasks such as changing taps or washers; carpentry tasks such as repairs to doors; general tasks such as moving furniture.

There are at present three types of service for which clients will be charged accordingly:

• Free service applies to clients who are owner occupiers or private tenants, who are on specific means tested or disability related benefits and have requested any of the tasks from a list of tasks provided by Salisbury District Council.

• Labour free service applies to clients who are owner occupiers or private tenants, who do not claim benefits but have requested any of the ‘falls prevention’ tasks from a list of tasks provided by Salisbury District Council. The client will receive an invoice for any materials used.

• Full paying service applies to any client who does not fit the criteria of the free and labour free service.

Tasks undertaken by our Handy People :

  • Painting / Repairing fences
  • Replacing bathroom tiles and tap washers
  • Lowering / fixing kitchen cabinets
  • Lowering and replacing kitchen work surfaces
  • Putting up shelves and hand rails
  • Installing key safes and outdoor garden rails

Grass Cutting Service

It is a fact that an overgrown, untidy garden can be a temptation to the ‘bogus’ caller.

The appearance of the outside of a house often gives clues as to who the occupant might be and an overgrown garden may well be perceived as belonging to an older person who is no longer capable of cutting the grass and therefore possibly vulnerable to the ‘bogus’ caller.

For this reason Age Concern Salisbury District provide a grass cutting service between the months of April and October.

Please telephone the Community Services office on 01722 322515, or speak to someone face to face, visit our offices on Brown Street, and the staff will be pleased to help you.

Alternatively, if you are interested in VOLUNTEERING, then we are always keen to hear from you! Give us a call at the same number.

Home Support service (Age Concern Salisbury District)

The Home Support service is a paid service providing support within the client’s home to enable them to remain in their own home, undertaking the tasks that the client is no longer able to do for themselves.

The service does not include personal care. Every client is assessed by a Community Services Officer in their own home and a home safety check and risk assessment is undertaken at the same time.

The Community Services Officer will discuss with the client exactly what tasks the client is able to do for themselves and what tasks the client would like the Home Support service to provide.

Tasks may include housework, shopping (both with and for the client), meal preparation, help with financial paperwork, accompanying to appointments.

The Home Support Service is provided by Community Assistants who are employed by the organization, receive full training and have a Criminal Record Bureau check.

Please telephone the Community Services office on 01722 322515, or speak to someone face to face, visit our offices on Brown Street, and the staff will be pleased to help you.

Older People's Forum (Age Concern Salisbury District)

  • The Work of the Department of Work and Pensions
  • The Local Area Older People's Strategy

We believe that it is important that older people continue to join the Forum so that every older person can have an opportunity to "have a say" about the issues which affect their lives.

We started a Theatre Club exclusively for older people in February 2005, providing the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy live theatre at reduced prices.

New members are welcomed by a volunteer host at the first event they attend, to introduce them to other members. Although Age Concern Salisbury District does not arrange transport for these events, they are able to put theatre members in touch with others who would be willing to offer a lift - or share a taxi.

Volunteering for Age Concern Salisbury District

We rely on volunteers who give their time freely in many areas within Age Concern Salisbury District. The tasks undertaken vary and may be in the form of:

  • Home visiting, which reduces social isolation
  • Reception or Information and Advice Centre at our office on Brown Street

Trustees, Older People's Forum and fundraiser all give their time, as well as many others in admin roles and ad hoc support.

Without our volunteers we could not run the services we provide. We are immensely grateful for the continuing value they bring to our organisation.

In our commitment to the personal development of staff and volunteers we provide low cost (often free) training for other agencies in South Wiltshire working with older people.
